If you’ve got a vacation on the horizon, you should be looking forward to having the time to relax and have fun. You don’t want to spend your time off worrying about your home and its security.

These six tips can help you keep your property safe while you’re on vacation — whether you’re a renter or a homeowner.
- Have a plan for your mail. A mountain of mail is a telltale sign that you aren’t home. Place a hold on your mail with the post office, or ask a neighbor to pick it up and keep it for you.
- Put your lights on a timer. A home that’s dark night after night looks empty. Consider setting at least some of your lights on a timer. You may even be able to control them with your phone.
- Keep your window coverings consistent. Do you usually keep your blinds or curtains open during the day? If you do, shutting them while you’re gone might actually send the signal that you aren’t inside.
- Avoid posting about your trip online. Posting updates and photos of all your vacation fun is tempting, but it’s easy for anyone to find this information online. Save your social media sharing for when you’re back home.
- Consider investing in a home security system. A security system can give your home an added layer of protection. Think about installing an alarm, motion detection and cameras. A security system could make you eligible for an insurance discount, too.
- Phone a friend. If you have a trusted friend or family member who lives nearby, ask them to swing by your house a few times while you’re away to make sure nothing is amiss.
