Your guide to wedding insurance coverage
A wedding is a major milestone event that often takes months or even years of planning.
Many couples pour thousands of dollars into creating a memorable event to celebrate their relationship.
Event insurance can protect that investment. So what should couples know about insuring their wedding (and reception)?
Coverage Categories
Wedding insurance covers a lot of “what ifs.” It’s typically broken down into two main categories:
- Liability Coverage: This insurance protects you in the event of property damage to the venue or medical bills if a guest gets injured. Some wedding venues may require couples to purchase liability insurance for their big day.
- Cancellation and Postponement Coverage: This type of coverage can help you recoup your investment if you need to cancel or postpone your wedding for reasons outside of your control, like inclement weather.
But event insurance doesn’t cover everything: For example, most policies do not provide coverage if you decide to call off the wedding due to COVID-19.
Cost of Insurance
The cost of a wedding insurance policy will vary based on the coverage limits you choose and the size of the wedding. A liability policy tends to start at around $180, and you can expect a cancellation and postponement policy to be anywhere from $150 to $600 on average.
When to Get Coverage
It’s a good idea to buy your wedding insurance policy once you begin putting down deposits for your venue and your vendors. Many contracts in the wedding industry are nonrefundable, so having insurance sooner rather than later can help to ensure you don’t lose your money.
